A man from North Carolina was arrested and charged with murder after authorities reported that he had stabbed his housekeeper. The incident was reported in a 911 call made by his wife. The incident occurred on March 6, and the man is awaiting extradition to Virginia, where he is facing murder charges.
Man charged with first-degree murder for allegedly stabbing his 54-year-old housekeeper.
The accused has been identified as Mathew Jared Vukmer, who fatally stabbed his 54-year-old longtime housekeeper, Paula Tilley Floyd. The stabbing occurred at Vukmer's residence just outside Hillsborough, N.C., according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
After the incident was reported, authorities promptly charged Vukmer with first-degree murder. They initiated a search, alleging that he had left his residence soon after the stabbing.
An updated statement from the Sheriff’s Office noted that Vukmer was arrested later on the same day in Grayson County, Virginia.
Vukmer’s wife reportedly called 911, according to records obtained by CBS 17. She told the dispatcher that she was at her desk when she heard Floyd falling. She ran to see what had happened and saw Vukmer stabbing the housekeeper.
“My husband was upstairs, and he said he heard someone and came down,” she told the dispatcher. “He attacked our cleaning lady because he thought she was someone else."
In the background, Vukmer can allegedly be heard saying, “We got Vladimir Putin,” before his wife cuts him off.
While tending to Floyd, the woman told the dispatcher that Vukmer got in his truck, and she believed he was going to get help.
Floyd is being remembered for her contagious energy and her care for others. Part of her obituary read that the family was never limited to blood when it came to Paula.
Background
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office had received a call to a home on Running Pine Court, where they found a 54-year-old woman dead from stab wounds. Investigators learned that the victim had worked as a long-time housekeeper for Vukmer, who also lived at the residence.
According to authorities, Vukmer’s wife heard some commotion between the two and went to check; she is the one who called 911. Within a few hours of the incident, the US Marshall Service Carolina’s Regional Fugitive Task Force found Vukmer across the state line in Virginia.
Vukmer has been held in custody on a charge of being a fugitive from justice, according to the the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. It is not yet clear whether Vukmer has denied the allegations or retained an attorney to speak on his behalf.
