An Ohio man was recently sentenced to six years in prison after admitting to fatally shooting his girlfriend.

Gage Smith, of Ohio, who was initially charged with murder, entered a guilty plea on March 12 to "one amended count of reckless homicide with a firearm specification and one amended count of possession of drugs," as per WBNS-10TV.

According to an incident report, Columbus police officers were dispatched Jan. 7, 2025, to the 100 block of Chittenden Ave. to investigate a disturbance around 7:21 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers encountered Smith, who was described as being in "emotional distress."

As officers entered the apartment, they found Autumn Ward unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound. Columbus fire medics later pronounced her dead at 7:49 AM.

"The preliminary investigation revealed domestic violence as a possible motive. Smith has been charged with Murder," the report stated at the time.

Multiple outlets reported that Smith initially called 911 and told dispatchers he had shot his girlfriend.

According to Law & Crime, Smith's sentence was less than the maximum possible sentence of seven years under his plea agreement.

Although he was sentenced to six years in prison, he will not serve the full term because the time already served reduced his remaining sentence to less than five years.

Meanwhile, Ward's family expressed disappointment with the sentence. Her mother, Karen Ward, said, "That's not enough."

"I thought I was told when this happened, he might get 20 years. I thought that's not enough. I do not believe in the court system," she said.

Ward continued:

"Ultimately, no matter what the sentence is today, Mr. Smith is going to be released as a still relatively young man, and Ms. Ward's promising life was cut short, and it's because of Mr. Smith's reckless handling of a firearm."

Smith addressed Ward's death in court, saying he misses her every day.

"I love and care for this remarkable woman, and not a day goes by that I don't miss her. I never meant for any of this to happen and wish that with all my heart that it hadn't," he said as per National Today.

He added that he "continue to remain accountable for my recklessness, my stupidity, and my complacency."

According to Law & Crime, prosecutors said there wasn't enough evidence to prove that Smith intended to kill the victim.

"Ultimately, no matter what the sentence is today, Mr. Smith is going to be released as a still relatively young man, and Ms. Ward's promising life was cut short, and it's because of Mr. Smith's reckless handling of a firearm," Assistant Prosecutor Daniel Lenert said in court.

Lenert also said Smith had used ketamine the night before the shooting and kept a gun under his pillow.

Defending Smith's defense attorney, Paul Olah, stated:

"I don't think he would stand here and tell everyone in this room that he was a perfect boyfriend. He knows he wasn't. He knows he wasn't, but I think he also would say he's not a murderer."
