While the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has received widespread media attention, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent said one key aspect of the case is being overlooked. Guthrie has been missing for more than 40 days, and investigators have not named a suspect.

Retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer said that while it is concerning that Guthrie has not yet been found, it is equally troubling that whoever abducted her remains on the run and could be looking for another target.

Ex-FBI agent warns the alleged abductors of Guthrie could be on the hunt for their next target.

Coffindaffer recently wrote on X, “Another point no one seems to be talking about: There is a kidnapper (at least 1) and a potential murderer (maybe more) on the streets. Who will be their next target?”

The former agent compared the case to the 2022 Idaho murders, in which four students were murdered.

Coffindaffer wrote, “This seems to be very targeted abduction (like the Idaho murders), but you still have an individual(s) capable of extreme violence on the loose.”

She reiterated that arresting a suspect is necessary to keep the community safe. Coffindaffer wrote, “Finding Nancy alive was objective 1. Objective 2 was getting an abductor (and likely murderer) off the streets. Will this person(s) strike again? This is a big issue. Not trying to raise hysteria, just saying that protecting the community seems to be lost in the hubbub.”

Coffindaffer, who worked as an FBI agent for 25 years, concluded that law enforcement needs to be transparent with the public and seek their help if needed. “LE needs to have a brief presser just to let the public know if there are any more details they can offer so the public can assist in terms of a vehicle/time parameters/any other important days to be aware of,” she wrote.

The Investigation So Far

Guthrie was last seen at her home on the night of January 31. Authorities believe she was allegedly taken from her secluded Catalina Foothills house that night. The 84-year-old was reported missing on February 1, after which the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI began investigating the case.

Detectives noticed blood on the property’s front porch, which authorities later confirmed to belong to Guthrie. A masked individual was also seen outside her home in Ring camera footage. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has said that the investigators are close to cracking the case, but there has not been any major breakthrough so far.

Officials have collected DNA evidence from Guthrie’s home and surveillance footage from her neighbors as clues. Coffindaffer’s comments about the potential kidnapper came days after one of Guthrie’s neighbors revealed that she saw a strange man in the neighborhood days ahead of her abduction.

The neighbor, Aldine Meister, said she noticed a suspicious man with a hat pulled low over his face around January 11, about three weeks before Guthrie went missing. She also claimed that the man had looked at Guthrie’s home for a long time while walking down the street.
