Woman in Her 70s Stabbed Up to 16 Times While Walking Dog in Random Attack, Police Say

A 25-year-old Florida man has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing a woman in her 70s to death while she was walking her dog in what authorities described as a random attack.
A quiet Florida neighborhood was shaken after a 25-year-old man was charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a woman in her 70s who was walking her dog. Authorities said the attack appeared to be random.
Kersten Francilus, 25, has been booked into the Martin County Jail, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
Francilus has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder and is being held without bond.
What Happened?
Around 4 p.m. on April 2, deputies received multiple calls about a suspicious man wandering through the South Wood community. According to Sheriff John Budensiek, the man approached several homes, knocked on doors, and asked residents where a new bank was located.
“There’s no bank around here,” Budensiek said.
While deputies were already responding, another call came in reporting a stabbing nearby. When officers arrived, they found the suspect actively attacking the victim and took him into custody at the scene. The woman was rushed to a hospital but died shortly after.
A bystander attempted to pull the suspect away from the victim during the attack.
Investigators said the suspect lives nearby with his mother, wife, and children, and that the steak knife used in the stabbing came from his home. He has no known prior criminal history.
Authorities said the victim was randomly targeted while walking her dog. There is no known connection between Francilus and the victim.
Detectives are continuing to investigate the case.

Martin County Stabbing Raises Hate Crime Questions
During a court appearance, Francilus reportedly described the victim as “Jewish” when questioned, a detail that has raised concerns.
While authorities have not officially classified the case as a hate crime, the statement has unsettled members of the local Jewish community.
“He did state that he killed her, and when asked to describe her, the only way he could describe her is that she was Jewish,” an official told the judge, according to WPTV.
“May her memory be a blessing,” said State Representative Debra Tendrich, who is Jewish and has co-sponsored several measures aimed at combating antisemitism in Florida.
Social Media Reactions
The incident has sparked strong reactions on social media, with many users debating whether the killing should be classified as a hate crime.
“Definitely hate crime,” one Instagram user wrote. “We all know exactly what this is… and what’s happening here and all over our country,” another commented.
Others expressed outrage, with one user calling for severe punishment for the suspect. "Hold him fully accountable."
