The hit-and-run case of Alexander McKellar caused the victim, Tony Parsons’ family, to wait for almost three years before his body could be found. The latter was undertaking a charity bike ride from Fort William to Tillicoultry when a drunk McKellar hit him with his pickup truck in 2017.

The 63-year-old was left to die on the side of the road, while Alexander and his brother Robert drove off. They later came back to the crime scene and took Parsons’ body, which they buried in a shallow grave inside their estate. The duo also hid all the possessions of the victim, so that their crime wouldn’t be traced.

Parsons’ Family Undertook Settlement After His Death

In January 2025, solicitors on behalf of Parsons’ family revealed that they had succeeded in securing a settlement with the insurers of Alexander’s car. As per reports, the settlement was somewhere close to a six-figure amount.

A statement from the defense solicitors explained that the amount recovered did not take away the pain of losing a loved one. But the family could remain secure after Parsons’ death. On the other hand, the victim’s widow, Margaret, vowed that she and the family would never forgive the McKellar brothers for their deed.

The particular hit-and-run case has garnered renewed interest after a Netflix documentary series was released about it. Titled Should I Marry A Murderer, it consists of first-person accounts from Alexander McKellar’s fiancée, Dr Caroline Muirhead.

She was the one who secretly recorded her fiancé confessing to the murder after years of trying to hide it. Muirhead was eventually successful in leading McKellar to disclose the location where he buried Parsons’ body after the hit and run.

The forensic pathologist then alerted the police about the entire case, after which they arrested the two brothers. Fast forward to now, the Netflix documentary solely focuses on the brave fiancée’s decision to report McKellar after secretly spying on him. But the family of Parsons never once makes an appearance to share their side of the story.

What’s Caroline Muirhead Doing Now?

The Netflix documentary also revealed what Muirhead has been doing since the incident. Speaking at the TUDUM event ahead of the release of the project, she admitted to having to revisit the darkest times of her life while making it.

In her words, “Making the documentary meant revisiting the darkest of times, and none of that was easy. But it has also been a cathartic experience. For the first time in several years, I now have hope for the future and the freedom to begin the next chapter of my life.”

After bravely leading her murderer fiancé McKellar towards prosecution, Muirhead has altered the course of her life. She shifted to the Scottish coastline and started a new life altogether. While the documentary film shows her struggle with excessive alcohol abuse after the incident, she has been sober ever since.

However, Muirhead is threatened and has surveillance cameras installed all around her home. She continues to fear that the McKellar brothers may one day walk out of prison and come after her for revenge.
