School Officer Who ‘Slammed’ 14-Year-Old to the Ground, Causing Brain Injury, Suspended for Two Days

Officer Hasun Rogers was suspended without pay after an internal investigation into the incident involving West Charlotte High freshman Ke’Nadie Cathey.
The school resource officer accused of body-slamming a freshman at West Charlotte High School has learned his fate.
Following an internal affairs investigation, officer Hasun Rogers was suspended without pay for excessive force, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Videos shared online appear to show Rogers throwing Cathey to the ground.
The Context
Rogers reportedly “slammed” Ke’Nadie Cathey “to the ground, on her back and head,” according to a letter signed by Chief Estella Patterson and Internal Affairs Maj. Brian Trull.
The letter stated that Cathey “immediately lost consciousness and experienced a seizure as a result.”
At the time, Cathey’s mother, Shakera Rorie, said the incident drastically changed her daughter’s life — from a teenager who once loved singing and dancing to someone who now spends most of her time sleeping.
It remains unclear how long Rogers’ suspension lasted or whether it is ongoing. Michael Littlejohn, the attorney representing Cathey’s family, shared the March 10 letter with The Charlotte Observer.
Videos shared online after the October 2025 incident appear to show Rogers throwing Cathey to the ground. During a later press conference, her family said she suffered a subdural hematoma, a type of brain bleed.
School Principal’s Warning
According to the letter, the school principal warned Rogers about a “potential gang fight after school dismissal” on October 31.
When students were dismissed around 2:20 p.m., many ran toward the school bus lot.
Rogers and two other CMPD officers stationed there alerted dispatch about a large crowd forming and requested additional units for crowd control. Rogers then drew his Taser and “pressed the arc button to disperse the crowd,” the letter said.
During the chaos, Rogers witnessed one student assaulting another. Although the fight had already been broken up, a crowd remained gathered around the officers.
Officer Rogers called for medical assistance after Cathey suffered a seizure.
The letter states that Cathey punched a staff member and another student who was on the ground, prompting Rogers to push her away.
“Officer Rogers then wrapped his arms around Miss Cathey’s upper body while still holding his TASER in his left hand,” the letter said.
“Officer Rogers lifted Miss Cathey off the ground, above his waist, while she flailed her arms. Officer Rogers stated he was struck.”
Rogers later called for medical assistance after Cathey suffered a seizure.
Internal Affairs investigators interviewed witnesses, questioned Rogers, and reviewed evidence as part of the investigation.
Social Media Reactions
The suspension sparked mixed reactions online.
“I disagree. The amount of students he was trying to control and she was throwing punches. Stupid ruling,” one X user wrote.
“WHY DOES every video segment begin with the officer grabbing the student AND NOT what happened before that moment? As in many of these cases, once you see the entirety of the event, you go... ahh, I see why the cop was forced to act the way he did,” another commented.
Others supported the department’s decision.
“Excessive force is being used all over the place. He didn’t just put her on the ground to stop her. He slammed her head and entire body,” one user wrote.
“The ruling was correct. He's lucky he wasn’t fired or charged,” wrote another user.
